Custom Website Development
Custom website development in the language your project needs
When a template or a CMS cannot carry your requirements, we build the site from the ground up in PHP, Laravel, Node.js, Python, Java, .NET, Ruby on Rails or a modern JavaScript framework, and we can continue work on custom code someone else wrote.
Website Development
What is custom website development?
Custom website development is the building of a website with code written for one organisation, instead of assembling it from a ready-made theme or template. It suits sites with unusual features, complex integrations, strict performance needs or logged-in areas, and it can use any language or framework, such as PHP, Node.js, Python, Java or .NET.
A custom build is the right answer when the website is part of the product: a quoting tool, a customer portal, a marketplace, a directory with complex search or a site that must talk to internal systems. A template can approximate these, but you end up fighting it. Writing the code for your case gives you full control of behaviour, speed and security.
We choose the stack on evidence. Laravel suits quick, well-structured PHP applications. Node.js and Next.js suit interface-heavy and API-driven products. Python and Django suit data-rich sites and anything near machine learning. Java and .NET suit organisations that already run them. If your team or hosting already uses a stack, we will usually work within it.
Custom does not have to mean unmaintainable. We write typed, tested and documented code, keep everything in version control with automated deployment, and hand over a repository and runbook that another developer can pick up without us.
Challenges
The problems we are usually brought in to solve
A template that cannot do what you need
Teams spend months bending a theme or plugin around a requirement it was never designed for, and the result is fragile.
Integrations that need real engineering
Connecting a site to ERP, CRM, payment or booking systems needs proper error handling, queues and logging, not a pile of scripts.
Performance at higher traffic
Pages that work for a few hundred visitors slow down or fail under load when queries, caching and hosting were never planned.
Security for sites that handle data
Accounts, uploads and payments introduce risks that need validation, access control and secure session handling from the start.
Legacy code nobody owns
Older PHP or ASP code without tests or documentation is expensive to change and risky to leave alone.
Locked into one supplier
Without access to the repository, deployment scripts and documentation, a business cannot change developers without starting over.
Capabilities
What the service covers
Bespoke marketing sites
Hand-built sites with exact design fidelity, advanced animation and very light pages, where a theme would add weight.
Portals and logged-in areas
Customer, partner and staff portals with roles, documents, approvals, notifications and secure sessions.
PHP and Laravel builds
Structured Laravel applications with queues, scheduled jobs, API endpoints and a clean data layer on MySQL or PostgreSQL.
Node.js and Next.js builds
Server-rendered React sites and TypeScript back ends with typed APIs, suited to interface-heavy products.
Python and Django builds
Data-driven websites and APIs, including features that call machine-learning models or process large datasets.
Java and .NET projects
New builds and continued development in Java or .NET for organisations that already run on those platforms.
APIs and third-party integrations
REST APIs, webhooks, payment gateways and CRM or ERP connections with retries, logging and monitoring.
Search, filtering and directories
Fast faceted search, map views and listing pages that stay indexable and shareable.
Code takeover and refactoring
Reading, testing and gradually cleaning custom code written by someone else, then extending it safely.
Our process
How an engagement runs
Every engagement has a named lead, a written scope and working software to review every one to two weeks.
- 01
Define requirements and constraints
We write down users, features, integrations, hosting limits and your existing team's skills before choosing a stack.
- 02
Choose and justify the stack
You receive a short written recommendation of language, framework and hosting with the reasons and the trade-offs.
- 03
Build in short cycles
Features arrive in one-to-two-week increments on a preview environment, with tests running in CI on every change.
- 04
Harden and load-test
We review security against common web risks, test under realistic load and check accessibility and browser support.
- 05
Deploy and hand over
The site goes live through an automated pipeline, with the repository, environment notes and runbook handed to you.

Use cases
Where it makes the biggest difference
Online quoting and estimating tool
A site that prices a job from a few answers, with rules held on the server and each quote passed to sales.
Customer or partner portal
Logins, order history, documents and support requests in a secure area linked to your CRM or ERP.
Searchable directory or marketplace
Listings with filters, maps, profiles and enquiries, built so every listing can rank in search.
Booking and scheduling platform
Availability, deposits, reminders and a staff view for managing changes and capacity.
Rebuilding a legacy PHP or ASP website
A staged move to a maintained framework, keeping URLs and content while removing years of technical debt.
Website with machine-learning features
A Django or Node.js site that calls models for recommendations, document reading or image checks.

Why Softweb Planet
Why teams choose us for this work
We pick the stack, not the other way round
We build across PHP, JavaScript, Python, Java and .NET, so the recommendation reflects your project and team.
Engineering discipline
Version control, code review, automated tests and deployment pipelines are standard, not extras.
Security by design
We design against the OWASP Top 10 risks from the first sprint and review before every release.
Your code, your repository
You own the source and get documentation, so you are never locked in to us.
What you can expect
- A website built around your exact requirements rather than a template
- A typed, tested codebase with documentation another team can maintain
- Integrations with logging, retries and alerts
- Hosting and deployment that you control
Custom Website Development FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Choose custom when your website is part of the product: unusual calculations, logged-in areas, complex integrations, very high performance needs or workflows no plugin supports. For content-led sites and standard shops, a CMS or Shopify is usually faster and cheaper, and we will say so if that is the case.
No single language wins every time. Laravel and PHP suit quick, structured applications, Node.js and Next.js suit interface-heavy products, Python and Django suit data-rich sites, and Java or .NET suit teams already running them. We recommend one in writing, with reasons, after learning your needs and your hosting.
A bespoke marketing site can take a few weeks, while portals and platforms take several months and are delivered in phases. Timeline depends on features, integrations and how quickly decisions and content arrive. You see working software on a preview environment every one to two weeks.
A custom build costs more upfront because developers write functionality instead of configuring existing tools. It can cost less over time when a template would need heavy workarounds. We scope the first release in writing and give a fixed quote, with later phases priced separately.
Yes. We start by reading the code, running it locally, checking tests and documenting what we find. Then we fix the riskiest problems and add features safely. If the code is beyond saving, we explain why and propose a staged rebuild, not a full rewrite.
Yes. We crawl the current site, list every indexed URL, keep or redirect each one, carry over titles and structured data, and migrate content in stages where needed. After launch we monitor Search Console, so we can fix any lost pages quickly.
Yes. The repository, deployment scripts and documentation are handed to you, hosted in an account you control. The contract states ownership clearly, and we keep nothing back that you would need to switch to another developer or team.
We validate input on the server, use parameterised queries, encode output, protect sessions and apply role-based access. Secrets are kept out of code, dependencies are scanned, and we review against the OWASP Top 10 before each release. Sensitive data is collected only when needed.
Yes. We build integrations through APIs and webhooks, with queues, retries, logging and alerts, so a failure in one system does not lose data. We confirm which system owns each record and test with real transactions before go-live.
It can be, if it is designed for it. We plan caching, database indexing, image delivery and hosting from the start, then test under realistic load. Where traffic is spiky, we use content delivery networks and horizontal scaling on cloud hosting.
