AEO & GEO (AI Search Optimisation)
Give AI answer engines accurate, citable facts about your business
ChatGPT search, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot assemble answers from sources they can retrieve and trust. We work to make your site one of those sources: crawlable, clearly structured, consistent across the web and specific enough to quote. Nobody controls what these systems say, so we measure what they actually return.
Digital Growth
What is AEO and GEO?
AEO (answer engine optimisation) and GEO (generative engine optimisation) are the practices of making a business easy for AI search tools, such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, to find, understand, quote and cite. They work through crawler access, consistent entity information, structured data, direct answers in page content and corroboration from trusted third-party sources.
Buyers can now put a question to an assistant instead of scanning a list of links: which supplier to shortlist, how two options compare, what a service should cost. The generated answer may cite only a handful of sources. If your business is missing from those sources, or described with outdated details, you may never know the conversation took place.
Answer engines mostly retrieve from search indexes and live crawls, then use a language model to summarise what they find. The fundamentals therefore still decide eligibility: pages must be reachable by the right crawlers, render as text without heavy client-side scripts and state facts plainly. On top of that we work on the signals generative systems lean on: a consistent entity description, structured data that matches visible content, passages that answer one question completely, and corroboration from sources other than your own site.
We are direct about the limits. No agency controls what a model says, answers vary between runs and users, and platforms change how they select sources without notice. So we treat AEO and GEO as measured practice rather than a promise: we track a fixed panel of buyer questions across answer engines, record when and how you are mentioned, and adjust content and entity work according to what changes.
Challenges
The problems we are usually brought in to solve
Absent from generated shortlists
Competitors are named when buyers ask an assistant for recommendations, while your business is missing even though it ranks in ordinary search results.
Assistants repeating outdated facts
AI answers quote an old address, a discontinued service or someone else's pricing because inconsistent external sources outweigh your own pages.
Copy with nothing quotable
Long introductions and vague marketing language give answer engines no clear statement to use, so they cite a forum thread or directory instead.
Retrieval crawlers blocked by accident
Firewall rules, bot protection or a copied robots.txt file shut out the crawlers answer engines use for search retrieval, removing the site from consideration.
No view of what AI answers say
Standard analytics reveal little about what happens inside generated answers, so teams cannot tell whether any effort is changing the result.
A thin entity footprint
Without consistent profiles, reviews and third-party mentions, models have little evidence of what the business does, where it operates and who it serves.
Capabilities
What the service covers
AI answer visibility tracking
A panel of real buyer questions sampled repeatedly across ChatGPT search, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot, recording mentions, citations, accuracy and the sources each engine prefers.
Crawler access and rendering review
Robots.txt, firewall and CDN bot rules checked so search and retrieval crawlers can reach key pages, with the important content present in server-rendered HTML.
Entity consolidation
One consistent description of who you are, what you offer and where you operate, aligned across the website, Google Business Profile, directories, social profiles and partner listings.
Answer-first content restructuring
Sections rewritten to open with a direct, self-contained answer, followed by specifics such as process, criteria, limits and examples that a model can quote accurately.
Entity schema and sameAs links
Markup describing the business, its services, people and products, with sameAs links to official profiles, generated from the same data as the visible page so the two never disagree.
Comparison and decision content
Pages for the questions assistants field most often, such as how options compare, what drives cost and what a term means, written with honest trade-offs.
Third-party corroboration
Accurate mentions earned on industry publications, directories, review platforms and community sites that answer engines already cite for your topics.
Product data for shopping answers
Clean product titles, attributes, prices and availability in schema and merchant feeds, so shopping-style answers describe your range correctly.
Bing indexing for Copilot
Bing Webmaster Tools verified, sitemaps submitted and IndexNow notifications sent on publish, because Copilot draws on Bing's index and many sites have never checked how Bing sees them.
Our process
How an engagement runs
Every engagement has a named lead, a written scope and working software to review every one to two weeks.
- 01
Question and fact discovery
We gather the questions buyers ask before contacting you, from sales calls, support tickets and Search Console queries, and document the facts every answer must get right.
- 02
Baseline across answer engines
The question panel is run several times on each engine to allow for variation, recording mentions, citations, accuracy and which sources are cited instead of you.
- 03
Make pages retrievable
Crawler access, rendering, indexing in Google and Bing, structured data and page speed come first, because content cannot be cited if it cannot be retrieved.
- 04
Content and entity work
Priority pages are restructured into answer-first sections, new pages cover unanswered questions, and business details are aligned across external profiles.
- 05
Rerun, compare and iterate
We rerun the panel on an agreed cadence, compare results with the baseline and the previous run, and choose the next work from the gaps that remain.

Use cases
Where it makes the biggest difference
Professional firm on assistant shortlists
A consultancy or law firm wants to appear when buyers ask an assistant which firms handle a particular type of work in their city or sector.
SaaS product in comparison answers
A software company wants accurate representation when users ask how it compares with alternatives, including pricing model, integrations and limits.
Correcting answers after a rebrand
A business that renamed, relocated or changed its services finds assistants repeating old facts, and needs the underlying sources updated so answers catch up.
Clinic explaining treatments clearly
A private clinic wants its plain-language explanations of treatments and booking steps to be sources AI Overviews can draw on, with medical content reviewed by its clinicians.
Retailer described correctly in shopping answers
A retailer wants product attributes, availability and returns policy described correctly when assistants suggest products in its category.
Arabic and English answers that agree
A business serving Saudi Arabia wants its Arabic and English profiles, schema and key pages to state the same facts, so answers in either language describe it the same way.
Industries
Industries we apply this to
Why Softweb Planet
Why teams choose us for this work
Hands-on with retrieval systems
We also build retrieval-augmented assistants that split, rank and cite documents, so we understand the general mechanics answer engines rely on, even though each platform keeps its exact selection rules private.
Technical SEO and development together
Crawler rules, server rendering, schema generation and site speed are handled by the same team that writes the content plan, so eligibility problems get fixed in the code.
Measurement without promised placements
We report what answer engines actually return for your questions, including when nothing has moved, rather than claiming control over systems no outside agency controls.
Planned per market and language
We serve clients in the UK, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and beyond, so question panels and entity work are set up per market, with any Arabic or Urdu content checked by native speakers before publication.
What you can expect
- A site that answer engines can crawl, render and quote accurately
- One consistent description of the business across your site and the sources that corroborate it
- Content that answers buyer questions directly, for people and machines alike
- A repeatable view of how AI answers mention and cite you over time
AEO & GEO (AI Search Optimisation) FAQ
Frequently asked questions
SEO aims to rank pages in traditional search results, AEO aims to have your content used as the direct answer to a question, and GEO aims to have generative AI systems mention and cite your business in the answers they write. They overlap heavily, since all three depend on crawlable pages, clear structure and trustworthy content. AEO and GEO put extra weight on entity consistency, quotable passages and corroboration from other sources.
No one outside those companies controls what their systems say, and anyone promising placement is overstating what is possible. Answers are generated per query, differ between users and runs, and shift as models and source selection are updated. What we can do is remove the reasons you are excluded, make accurate information easy to retrieve and quote, build corroboration on sources these systems already trust, and then measure how often you appear.
Most answer engines retrieve candidate pages from a search index or a live crawl, then a language model selects passages that answer the question and attributes some of them. The exact rules are not published, but citations tend to go to pages that are indexed, render as text, address the specific question directly and agree with other sources. Google AI Overviews draw on Google's own index and Copilot relies on Bing, so ordinary indexing still matters.
That depends on whether you object to model training or to being found, because several AI companies run separate crawlers for each purpose. OpenAI uses GPTBot for training and OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, so blocking only the first keeps you eligible for search citations. Google-Extended controls whether Google may use your content for Gemini models, but it does not affect Google Search, including AI Overviews. We review your robots.txt, firewall and CDN rules against the policy you actually want.
We build a panel of real buyer questions and run it repeatedly across ChatGPT search, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot, recording whether you are mentioned, cited and described accurately, and which sources appear instead. Because answers vary, each question is sampled several times. We combine this with referral traffic from AI platforms in Google Analytics and query data from Search Console, accepting that no tool yet gives complete visibility into AI answers.
Some of it. Clicks from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini usually arrive as referrals from their own domains, which we group into a dedicated AI platforms channel. ChatGPT search also tags many outbound links with a chatgpt.com source parameter. Clicks from Google AI Overviews are counted as ordinary Google organic traffic, and Search Console folds AI Overview impressions into its web search totals. Many answers produce no click at all, which is why we also sample the answers themselves.
Schema markup helps machines read facts about your business, services, products and authors without guessing, and Google uses it to understand entities and show rich results. It does not earn citations on its own. FAQ markup, for example, no longer produces rich results for most sites, although it still describes the page clearly. Markup must match what is visible, agree with your other profiles and sit on content worth citing, so we generate it from the same data as the page.
Content that answers one specific question completely in a short passage, then backs it with concrete detail, tends to be quoted most. In practice that means a clear definition or verdict at the top of a section, specifics such as criteria, steps and constraints you can state honestly, named sources for claims, and visible authors and dates. Generic overviews that could describe any company give a model little reason to choose your page.
Technical changes such as unblocking crawlers or fixing rendering can take effect within weeks, once pages are recrawled and reindexed. Changes in how often you are mentioned usually take longer, because they depend on new content being indexed, other sources being updated and the engines refreshing what they retrieve. Some questions may not move at all for a while, and the panel results will show that plainly rather than leaving you to judge by impressions.
For most sites it is a low priority. The llms.txt file is a proposed convention for giving language models a curated summary of a site, but it is not an established standard and the major answer engines have not confirmed relying on it for citations. It is cheap to add, so we may include one, but crawlable pages, accurate structured data and well-organised content come first, because those are what retrieval systems use today.
You correct the sources rather than the model. We trace where the wrong detail comes from, often an old directory listing, press article, review profile or outdated page on your own site, then update or remove it and publish a clear, current statement of the correct facts. Some platforms also accept feedback on individual answers. Corrections appear as engines recrawl and refresh their sources, so we keep checking until the answers catch up.
No, although the groundwork overlaps. AEO and GEO influence how public engines such as ChatGPT search and Google AI Overviews describe you, which you cannot control. An assistant on your own site or WhatsApp answers only from content you choose, under rules you set. Both work better when pages are split into self-contained answers with consistent facts, so content restructured for answer engines can later feed a retrieval-augmented assistant if you decide to build one.
Cost depends on how many services, products and markets need coverage, how much technical work the site needs, and how much new content and third-party corroboration is required. We usually start with a fixed-price baseline and audit that shows where you stand across answer engines, then quote a monthly scope with named deliverables. If your gaps turn out to be ordinary SEO problems, we will recommend fixing those first.
